Getting to Valletta from Malta International Airport
Malta is a very small country, so there is only one main airport, Malta International Airport and it’s only around 8 km from Valletta. The airport has direct flights to over 100 cities all over Europe and the Middle East.
Airport transfers
Several private taxi providers (such as Welcome Pickups) offer Malta airport transfers to several destinations and hotels around the island at more economical rates than grabbing a taxi at the airport or booking with international agents. Mobility services such as Uber, e-Cabs and Bolt are also available and one can easily get around Malta using any of these services through the relevant application.
Using the Public Transport
There are also express bus services from the airport to Valletta, which are very easy to navigate. Route X4 can take you to Valletta, Floriana’s neighbouring town, and down South to Birżebbuġa. Tickets can be purchased from the airport arrivals hall as well as directly from the bus driver (although please make sure you offer the exact amount of cash or a small denomination since drivers carry limited change, or use a contactless debit/credit card) and are single journey tickets that can be used to get to any destination within two hours, including interchanging. Rates vary between day (€2.00 per person) and night (€3.00 per person, applicable to the routes identified by the letter N before the route number).
Car Hire
If you’re a confident driver, renting a car might be the most suitable option for travelling around the islands! There are several rental agencies at Malta’s airport. You can pre-book your rental online or choose to do so upon arrival. Numerous car rental agencies are available on arrival at MLA airport (follow the signs to the Park East parking area). A mix of international and local car hire agents are represented, e.g. AVIS, Budget, Citygo Rentals, Europcar, First Car Rental, Gold Car, Green Motion, Hertz and Sixt.
